Rules of the Road

Now that you understand the traffic light approach to eating, the simple guidelines that follow can keep you safe from trouble when you’re cruising along.

FOR MUCHO MOJO, CHOOSE “SMART CARBS”

To live the life you want, you need mojo, the energy and mental fortitude it takes to make that life happen. I define mojo as a certain type of energy that makes you feel like you can do anything. You feel confident, alive, energetic, and strong. Your nutrition will deliver energy to support your mojo!

In general, choose complex carbohydrates over simple carbs. Simple carbohydrates tend to be sugars, the type of processed or refined food that breaks down easily in the body. And the reason you want to avoid simple carbohydrates and processed sugars is because you get a quick peak or a sudden jolt of energy and then a crash, leaving you lower than where you started. You want a well-balanced level of energy that you can sustain day in and day out for the rest of your life. So avoid simple carbs. They’re addictive empty calories. White-flour breads, pastas, sugars, pastries, chips, processed crunchy stuff, white rice, and most all processed foods make us crave more processed foods.

You do need carbohydrates, so chose whole grains, fruits with the skin on, and other nutrient-dense choices. Look for high-quality sources of natural complex carbohydrates, like yams or sweet potatoes—sweet potatoes could be cooked in minutes in your microwave. Be creative.
